브리다 / 파울로 코엘료
이 책은 작년 2010년 말에 한국에서 출판된 후로 지금까지 베스트셀러에 자리하고 있다. 그래서 당연히 파울로 코엘료의 최신작이라고 생각했는데, 알고 보니 그게 아니다. 신작은커녕 그가 글을 쓰기 시작한 시점에서 얼마 되지 않은 1990년 첫 출간한 장편소설이라고 한다. 하지만 그다지 알려지지 않은 소설이어서 작가 자신이 절판시켰고, 오랫동안 소수의 독자들에게만 숨겨진 보석으로 회자되던 작품이다.
그러던 것이 처음 출간된 지 18년 만인 2008년에 독자들의 요청에 힘입어 재출간되었고 2010년 드디어 한국에도 출판된 것이다. 사장되는 줄 알았다가 다시금 빛을 보게 된 소설. 작가 자신에게도, 글 자체에도 감회가 새로울 것 같다.
그러나 안타깝게도 나는 이 새롭게 나타난 보석같은 작품을 이해하기가 힘들었다. 흔히 파울로 코엘료에게는 '우주의 언어'로 글을 쓰는 사람, '마법의 이야기꾼'이라는 수식어가 자주 붙는데, 이번엔 정말로 '이 사람이 우주의 언어로 글을 썼나.'하는 생각이 들 정도였다. 그만큼 훌륭하다기보다 그만큼 이해하기가 힘들다는 뜻이다^^;;.
우선 간단히 신비로운 이야기의 줄거리부터 살펴보자.
| 마법을 배우고 싶은 브리다는 숲 속의 마법사를 찾아간다. 태양의 전승 마스터인 그와, 달의 전승 마스터 위카를 만나면서 세상의 신비와 소울메이트에 대해 알게 된다. 우리의 영혼은 윤회를 거듭하며 분화되므로, 삶에서 나뉜 영혼, 즉 소울메이트를 다시 만나야 한다는 사명을 지닌다. 그 재회를 '사랑'이라고 부르는 것이다. 브리다는 자신이 마녀라는 것을 받아들인 후 위카에게서 마법의 신비에 입문하는 과정을 배운다. 그 과정에서 그녀는 자신이 끊임없이 고민해 왔던 것들. 자신은 왜 마법을 배우려 하는지, 자신의 재능은 무엇인지, 운명은 어디에 있는지에 대해 알게 된다. 입문을 위한 마지막 시험으로, 그녀는 '섹스'라는 힘에 대해 진정으로 경험하게 된다. 그녀의 소울메이트였던 마법사가 아니라, 그녀를 진정으로 사랑하는 남자친구 로렌스와 함께. 그러나 곧 마법사가 자신의 소울메이트임을 깨닫고 그와도 의식을 치른다. 마녀로서의 입문을 거행하는 안식일 집회 파티에 브리다는 로렌스와 마법사를 초대한다. 달의 입문식이 이루어지고 그녀는 마녀로서 자각한다. 브리다는 마법사와 함께 남고자 하지만, 마법사는 사랑을 소유하지 않음으로써 영원히 소유하게 되는 가르침에 대해 깨닫고 브리다를 보내준다. |
파울로가 이야기하고자 하는 주제들의 집약체
자아찾기 여행 <연금술사>, 섹스를 통한 진정한 사랑과 자아 발견 <11분>, 진정한 자신을 찾기 위해 자신의 가장 소중한 것을 버리는 용기 <포르토벨로의 마녀>, 신의 여성적인 면모와 우리네 삶 도처에 존재하는 신 <피에트라 강가에서 나는 울었네>, 소유와 속박으로부터 자유로운 사랑 <오 자히르>….
그리고 개별적으로 다루어왔던 이 주제들을 <브리다>에서 하나의 이야기로 만들었다.
내가 파울로 코엘료를 좋아하고, 세계의 많은 사람들이 그를 좋아하는 이유는 아마도 주제를 이야기를 통해 풀어내는 그의 솜씨가 정말 탁월하기 때문일 것이다. 이 작품에서 하나로도 만만찮은 주제를 한꺼번에 다루면서 그 솜씨는 빛을 발하는데, 많은 주제들을 잘 버무려서 자연스럽게 하나로 만들었다. 그리고 역시 아름답고 신비한 문장들로 독자들을 매혹한다.
현실과 동떨어진 소재
익숙해진 파울로 코엘료의 주제인데, 난 왜이리도 <브리다>가 난해하게만 느껴지는 걸까. 이유를 생각해보니 <브리다>의 소재 때문인 것 같다.
이 이야기는 코엘료가 순례 중에 만난 브리다 오페른이라는 아일랜드 여성이 실제로 겪은 영적 탐색의 길을 토대로 쓰여졌다고 한다. 파울로 코엘료가 그 일을 언젠가 글로 써도 되냐고 묻자 그녀는 어떤 독자들이 읽게 될 것인지, 또 그들이 어떤 반응을 보일지 등을 궁금해했다. 그리고 이렇게 말했다.
"당신 말이 맞아요. 워낙 개인적인 경험이라서요. 사람들이 그 이야기에서 과연 유익한 무언가를 얻을 수 있을지도 잘 모르겠고요."
그녀 말이 맞다. 너무도 개인적인 그녀의 경험은 나와는 다른 세계 이야기다. 가톨릭인 종교가 그렇고, 태고의 켈트족 마법, 고대의 신비, 지혜의 전승들은 한 번도 생각해본 적 없던 소재들이다. 리얼리즘을 결합하여 현대적으로 풀어냈다고는 하지만 그래도 생소한 것은 어쩔 수 없다.
비슷한 주제인 <11>분이 내 마음에 와닿았던 것은 현대 여성인 마리아를 통한 공감이 있었기 때문이다. 그러나 <브리다>의 주인공 브리다는 같은 젊은 여성임에도 내가 공감할 수 없는 일들에 대해 관심을 가지고 경험한다.
파울로 코엘료가 종종 다루는 자아찾기, 진정한 사랑 같은 주제들을 좋아한다. 하지만 왠지 요즘의 그는, 점점 '신비'라는 것에 빠져들어 가는 듯 하다.
‘인간 존재가 경험할 수 있는 가장 고귀한 것은 신비를 받아들이는 것’이라고 말한 인터뷰를 보며 나는 혼란스러움을 느꼈다. 인간이 경험할 수 있는 가장 고귀한 '신비'라는 것이 사랑이나 영혼, 이런 것들을 말하는 것일까 아니면 이 책의 소재로 쓰인 '마법'이니 '지혜의 전승' 같은 것일까. 모르겠다. 이 책을 읽은 다른 누군가와 토의라도 하고싶은 심정이다.
마음에 담은 문장
난해한 이야기며 생소한 소재들이지만, 그럼에도 불구하고 그의 매혹적인 글솜씨는 여전하다. 기억하고픈 구절을 다시 돌아보며 독서를 마무리한다.
p41. 숲 속에서 혼자 밤을 보내게 된 브리다.밤은 하루의 일부에 불과했다. 그녀는 빛의 보호를 받고 있음을 느끼듯이, 어둠의 보호를 받고 있다고 느낄 수도 있다. 어둠이 있기에 어떤 존재에게 가호를 부탁할 수도 있다. 어둠이 있기에 어떤 존재에게 가호를 부탁할 수 있는 것이다. 그것을 신뢰해야 했다. 그리고 그런 신뢰가 바로 믿음이었다. 아무도 믿음이라는 것을 온전히 이해할 수는 없으리라. 믿음은 지금 그녀가 경험하고 있는 것, 아무런 설명도 없이 이렇게 어두운 밤 속에 가라앉아 있는 것과 다르지 않다. 믿음은 오로지 사람들이 믿기 때문에 존재한다. 기적이, 설명이 불가능함에도 그것을 믿는 사람들에게 일어나는 것처럼.
p134. 아버지에 대한 이야기아버지는 그녀를 번쩍 안아올려 바닷물까지 데리고 가더니, 아무 말 없이 물속에 풍덩 집어넣었다. 그녀는 깜짝 놀랐지만, 곧 이것이 아버지의 장난이라는 걸 알고 재미있어했다.
"물이 어떠니?" 아버지가 물었다.
"좋아요." 그녀가 대답했다.
"그래, 이제 앞으로 뭔가를 알고 싶으면 그 안에 푹 빠져보도록 해."
p192. 위카의 가르침 중"섹스를 경험해본 사람이라면 알고 있거든. 자신이 통제력을 잃어야만 그 절정에 이를 수 있는 경이로운 현상을 앞에 두고 있다는 것을. 우리가 누군가와 한 침대에 들어갈 때, 우리는 육체 뿐 아니라 우리의 전 존재와 교감하도록 허락하는 거야. 우리와는 별개로 생명의 그 순수한 힘들은 서로 소통을 하고, 그러고나면 우리가 누구인지 숨길 수가 없게 되지.
